Heavenly Music

On 25 and 26 June 2005, the grounds of the National Maritime Museum were alive with the sound of space as participants in the free Heavenly Music workshops wandered around with handheld low frequency radios listening to the cosmic sounds around them.

The low frequency radios picked up the Sun, Earth’s natural frequencies, the aurora chorus, pulsars, magnetosphere sounds, the cosmic microwave background, as well as Jupiter and its moons - and listening in on these sounds was a first for most of the participants.

The workshops also included short demonstrations using musical instruments to explain the concepts of harmonics and string theory before participants were let loose on the instruments to compose their own space-inspired tunes.

For more information about the workshops see our press release.
